Transmission service generally consists of changing both the fluid and the filter in a vehicle that is equipped with an automatic transmission. This type of service is considered to be a type of preventive maintenance. Maintaining your transmission by regularly getting it serviced is critical in extending the life of a transmission.

How much does it cost?
The cost of transmission service will vary depending on a few factors. Some of these factors are:

  • The type/brand of transmission fluid used
  • The capacity for fluid in the transmission oil pan
  • The type of vehicle. Some vehicles require a lot of work just to gain access to the transmission oil pan and the amount as well as the difficulty of this work can influence the price. For example, some front wheel drive vehicles require that an entire portion if the sub frame in the front be removed.

All of these factors and more can influence the price of transmission service.

When is it needed?

Vehicles that are equipped with an automatic transmission generally need to be serviced about once a year. However, this too varies. If you have a high mileage vehicle or there are heavy loads that are carried often then you may need to have your transmission serviced more frequently. Also, if the transmission in your vehicle uses a synthetic blend then you will need to follow the schedule laid out in your owner's manual.

Things to know

The internal parts of a transmission are kept clean because of the amount of detergent that is in new transmission fluid. As that fluid ages, the concentration of that cleansing detergent is lessened which means that your internal parts are not getting the bath that they need to stay in tip top shape. A residue that is sort of like varnish will start to build up on these parts and this could lead to expensive repairs if not taken care of properly.

That said, even though generally, only 4 quarts of transmission fluid is changed out during service (as opposed to 12 quarts), the new transmission fluid can actually break off some of these varnish like residue and then it will travel all through the transmission. These flakes can actually cause valves to stick and other problems.

The best way to avoid these things from happening is by getting your transmission fluid changed regularly.
