BMW stands for Bavarian Motor Works. We all know that BMW is a brand of German luxury cars but are you aware that BMW is also the parent company of Rolls Royce? Aside from that, BMW is also the parent company of Mini cars and they also make motorcycles.
In the Beginning
BMW originated from a corporate restructuring of Rapp Motorenwerke which made aircraft engines. This restructuring occurred in 1917. They were forbidden to make aircraft engines by the Versailles Armistice Treaty so they moved to making motorcycles in 1923 and then in 1928 they added vehicles to the line. In WWII they produced aircraft engines for the Third Reich.
By 1959, BMW was in the red and had to decide whether or not to keep making cars. They decided to keep trying and bought the rights to the Italian car Iso Isetta. These were tiny cars that BMW powered with motorcycle engines. The design was a success and brought BMW back from the brink of financial disaster.
In 1966 BMW bought the Hans Glas corporation. This was so that they could gain access to the overhead cam shaft and timing belt technology that Glas was using.
In 1995 BMW became the majority stockholder in Designworks USA which is an industrial design studio. The year before that though they bought out Rover Group which made Land Rovers, MG and the Rover. Rover was incurring massive losses though so in 2000 BMW sold Rover and MG to something known as the Phoenix Consortium and Land Rover was sold to Ford.
In 2001, the Mini was introduced.
After WWI, BMW began making motorcycles. The first one that was successful was the R23 which was produced in 1923. In WWII they made the BMW R75 which had a sidecar. The wheel on the sidecar had its own motor and a locking differential which made it a great vehicle for using off road.
It wasn’t until 1982 that the water cooled, shaft driven K Series was introduced. These were made with 3 or 4 cylinders. In 2007 they introduced the anti-skid technology known as electronic stability control.
BMW has had a huge amount of various cars that have been produced over the years. They have even had some Formula One cars that have had some success. There are other races that BMW powered cars did well in too such as the Le Mans 24 Hours, 24 Hours of Daytona and the American Le Mans Series just to name a few.
BMW takes pains to be a company with as small a carbon footprint as possible. They are a charter member in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Environmental Achievement Track as well as the Environmental Excellence Program in South Carolina.
